Reciprocating piston compressors are still the most common choice for most small compressed air systems. The piston unit is a cost-effective choice if air demands are low and air quality does not impact productivity. There is, however, a segment of compressed air users that may require more constant flows at a higher level of air quality. CNC machining centers, laser and plasma cutters, as well as paint/coating spray operations are all examples of applications that may be more productive with rotary screw compressors.
