Company History

Over 90 years of manufacturing experience

1919
The company was founded in Coburg by Carl Kaeser, Sr. as an engineering workshop producing engine parts and special machinery for the local glass industry. The business was quite successful and grew to 150 employees in the first few years.

1948
With the division of Germany after the second world war, most of Kaeser's existing customers were isolated in the east, forcing Kaeser to refocus its products towards new markets in the south and west. At the time there was a growing need for compressors and using the extensive engine experience as a base, Carl Kaeser decided to pursue this lucrative market. Kaeser developed and built the first reciprocating compressor in 1948, and a complete range soon followed.

1973
In 1973, Carl Kaeser, Jr., son of the founder, made a major strategic decision for the company's future. Kaeser engineers developed a rotary screw compressor with a new, energy-efficient airend. The new Sigma Profile airend featured precisioned machined rotors in a proprietary helical screw design. Production of an entire screw compressor line began that year, met with overwhelming market success, and helped establish Kaeser as a leader in compressor manufacturing.

1978
Kaeser established its first subsidiary in Switzerland. It was just the beginning of Kaeser's international sales and service organization.

1982
Kaeser Compressors, Inc., the U.S. affiliate of Kaeser Kompressoren, opened its headquarters in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

2001
Building on the success of its Sigma Control system, Kaeser developed Sigma Air Manager.  This unique new product was the first comprehensive air system controller to combine state-of-the-art engineering, modern  industrial PCs and Internet technology offering unparalleled cost savings and unprecedented levels of reliability, realtime access and efficient system control.

2002
Kaeser opened its second Mobilair portable compressor factory and began production in early spring. The Gera manufacturing plant celebrated its 125th anniversary.

2004
February 2004 brings the opening of Kaeser's new research and development center at the primary manufacturing site in Coburg. "It is our goal" said Managing Director Thomas Kaeser son of Carl Kaeser, Jr. at the opening, "to continue bringing innovative and customer-oriented products to the market even faster than to date".
Kaeser also invests in a new, fully automatic storage and distribution center - streamlining production and ensuring on-time, error-free delivery.

2009
Kaeser introduces the 2-in1 HSD at the Hanover Fair - the first of its kind to combine two complete compressors in one unit.

Kaeser Compressors, Inc. opens a new 20,000 sq. ft addition to their US headquarters in Fredericksburg, Virginia and also becomes an ENERGY STAR Partner.

In July of 2009, Kaeser mourns the loss of Carl Kaeser, Jr. who led the company for over 70 years.

2010
Kaeser Compressors headquarters facility receives its official ENERGY STAR certification.

Today Kaeser is still a family-owned company led by Thomas Kaeser and Tina-Maria Vlantoussi-Kaeser.  Kaeser's workforce has grown to approximately 5,000 employees world-wide.
